Hexoskin to build world’s largest database of vital signs for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis patients with ICANCME Research Network

Montreal, Canada, August 22, 2019  - The CIHR (Canadian Institutes of Health Research) organized a press conference at CHU Sainte-Justine, Mother and Child University Hospital Center today to announce the funding of a five-year project to collect biological and vital signs data from patients suffering from Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), to improve medical knowledge of the disease. Canadian Minister of Health, the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, was at the event to make the announcement with Dr. Alain Moreau, Scientific Director of the Viscogliosi Laboratory in Molecular Genetics of Musculoskeletal Diseases.

In Canada, over half a million Canadians suffer from ME. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention), in the United States, 836,000 to 2.5 million Americans suffer from ME, but most of them have not been diagnosed. There is currently no biological diagnostic test for ME. The disease is diagnosed based on symptoms and by ruling out other conditions that could be causing the symptoms. The CHIR funded project will build the largest long-term cardiopulmonary and activity database in the world for patients with ME.

Hexoskin, a Montreal-based leader in smart clothing, health software, and AI services will provide its health monitoring solutions to support building the database. Pierre-Alexandre Fournier, CEO of Hexoskin, is pleased by today’s announcement: ‘’We believe this project will help us understand how to better take care of patients presenting symptoms of ME. Recent data shows that the prevalence of this disease is higher than previously estimated and has an enormous impact on Canadians living with ME and our society. Data collected in this project will impact millions of lives’’.

Dr. Alain Moreau will be the Principal Investigator with the Interdisciplinary Canadian Collaborative Myalgic Encephalomyelitis - ICANCME - Research Network: “Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) is possibly the last medical enigma of the 21st century. Our scientific partnership with Hexoskin will be instrumental to address the complexity of ME given its clinical heterogeneity and phenotypic variability overtime. The Hexoskin wearable technologies will allow researchers and clinicians to investigate people severely affected by ME (housebound or bedridden), which is rarely done due to their limited capacity to participate in clinical studies.”

Everest & Back in 14 days by Roxanne Vogel - An endurance Lab Project using Astroskin

Roxanne Vogel, Mountaineer and Nutrition & Performance Research Manager at Gu Energy Labs, became the first person to complete a lightning ascent of Mount EverestOn a normal climb, the journey would take nearly two months, but Vogel completed the round trip in just 14 days.

The Hexoskin team wants to congrats Roxanne for completing this amazing challenge and reaching the top of the world!

Astroskin: a non-invasive method to collect novel data above 7000 m continuously and in real-time to study the effects of altitude.

Roxanne turned the experience into a science project to study the effects of a rapid ascent on the human body. For this journey, the Astroskin Shirt presented itself as an important measurement tool to study the Montaineer vital signs during the ascent. «It was a non-invasive method to collect novel data above 7000 m continuously and in real-time so that I could not only monitor my physiology for safety reasons but also gather information about how the human body adapts to high altitude hypoxia in such a short amount of time. This is the first time the world will see continuous data of this nature for the variables Astroskin measures! I needed something I could put on, press start, and forget about that didn’t take up much space or weight to carry, and Astroskin was the perfect solution.

The Astroskin Shirt is comfortable to wear and the set up is very user-friendly. I put it on and basically forgot it was there, except when I had to change batteries. It made my life as a scientist on the mountain so much easier than if I were to attempt to collect similar variables at distinct data points, which would only provide a “snapshot” of the data, not a complete picture. Overall, it was a great experience using the Astroskin», said Roxanne Vogel, Mountaineer and Nutrition & Performance Research Manager at Gu Energy Labs.

A 14 days Mount Everest Lightning Ascent that Pushes the Limits
of Mountaineering

Roxanne left Berkeley on May 10 for the 14 days Mount Everest Lightning Ascent and complete her sixth summit climb out of the world’s seven highest mountains. Vogel spent four months training with coaches and three months training for the changes in altitude.

Roxanne Vogel reached the summit on May 22 at 11:45 a.m and arrived back in the San Francisco at 11 p.m. Friday. Her next adventure is in Antarctica, where she will endeavor to complete her seven-summit goal by the end of the year.

«My friend and hero Lydia Bradey and I summited Mount Everest (8848 meters/29,029 ft), the first climbing members to reach it from the Tibet side this season, just as the rope-fixers finished putting up the final 500 vertical feet of lines. They hugged and high-fived us as they descended, leaving us alone with our two Sherpas, Mingma Tshering and Pasang Tendi, on the summit, an incredible and almost non-existent experience.

We climbed from Camp 2 at 7700 meters, departing late by Everest standards at 1:45 AM, to give the rope fixers time to finish their work. No one else climbed from the north side that day. We were so fortunate to have the mountain all to ourselves. Hard to believe, still processing.»

FC Barcelona - Barça Innovation Hub (BIHub) and Allianz align themselves to promote a study on sleep and young athletes

Hexoskin is very proud to be part of this study on sleep and young athletes with FC Barcelona, a world leader in the development of young athletes, and Allianz, one of the world's largest insurers.

Hexoskin has been involved in sleep research since 2012. We share the views of FC Barcelona that we need to do more research on sleep and young athletes to optimize their health and their gameplay. There's more than one way to monitor sleep with Hexoskin smart shirts, and this study allows us to advance of our knowledge of sleep in teenage athletes.

"The information gathered will be processed by doctors at the Adsalutem Institute, and FC Barcelona will provide data on the performance of the analysed athletes to be cross-referenced with those obtained on the quality of their sleep. A study will be shared detailing the conclusions obtained. The Adsalutem Institute has the academic support of the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC) within the framework of the 'Center for Studies of Sleep Medicine', in which both entities collaborate in the scientific and teaching fields."

Hexoskin's Applications & Validations in Cardiology Research

17.7 million people died from cardiovascular diseases in 2015, representing 31% of all global deaths (World Health Organisation). In most cases, cardiovascular diseases can be prevented.

People with cardiovascular disease with a high cardiovascular risk (due to the presence of one or more risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia or already established disease) need early detection and management using counseling and medicines, as appropriate.

Hexoskin is an efficient and accurate solution to collect quantitative data about patients, every day, in real-life situations, over a long period. Researchers in many countries are performing cardiology studies with Hexoskin.

Here are a few publications about research projects that used Hexoskin to monitor cardiac and pulmonary activities from participants:
