Quotes

“Astroskin is a perfect example of how our government works with small, innovative, Canadian businesses on space technologies that lead to commercial versions for use by Canadians.”

The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development

“Astroskin may have many applications on Earth, such as medical monitoring of those confined to their homes by illness, people living in remote areas with limited medical access, and those working in hazardous environments. It is another in a long list of space technologies brought down to Earth for all of us.”

The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport

“Our team is proud of the role we are playing to support human space travel. One day, thousands of space travelers bound for Mars will need simple reliable medical systems to ensure their health. Deploying our wearable sensors and software to the ISS is significant as this represents the ultimate remote patient monitoring scenario. The findings from tracking the health of astronauts will be used to make our healthcare system more accessible and support new home care and telemedicine services.”

Red Bull flying with Hexoskin in the Karakorum

The Free Flight Physiology Project Team in Karakorum, Pakistan is using Hexoskin to monitor their vitals when they fly over the countryside. Dr Matt Wilkes and this team from the Centre for Altitude, Space and Extreme Environment Medicine from the Institute of Sport Exercise & Heath (London, UK) are getting their gear ready for the Red Bull paragliding team later this year, but also to conduct serious research on physiology in altitude. They also took amazing pictures and video of their experience!

Paragliding in Pakistan

Here's more information about their project:

Paragliding is an air sport that has developed over the last 40 years into one of the most widely practiced forms of free flight. There are an estimated 127,000 active paraglider pilots worldwide.
Flights of over 100km across country are regularly made, using dynamic (soaring) lift and thermal updrafts, with the current open distance record standing at 514km. Paraglider pilots have flown from the summit of Everest, ascended in thermals to over 7,000m and gained as much as 4,526m of altitude in a single flight. (...)
Successful flying requires good physical coordination but is also cognitively demanding, for example: reading the landscape for thermal triggers and calculate glide angles, while remaining sufficiently spatially aware to pilot a craft though an invisible three-dimensional air mass, often containing other gliders in close proximity; in cold, hypoxic, ever-changing and sometimes intimidating conditions. (...)
Paragliding has become much safer over time but remains a high-risk pursuit. Most accidents are secondary to errors of piloting or judgement, rather than equipment failure. When accidents do occur, the consequences are often severe or fatal. Understanding the physiological demands on placed on pilots is therefore key to establishing systems to prevent injury or loss of life."

NASA's HERA Mission is Wearing Hexoskin Tech

Hexoskin is taking a new step in space medicine this week at the Johnson Space Center in Houston (Texas). Our team was on site to help the HERA X crew setup their Astroskin systems. The HERA missions are designed to simulate long-term space missions and to prepare the future expeditions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

According to NASA:

"The Human Exploration Research Analog (HERA), formerly known as the Deep Space Habitat, was transferred from the JSC Engineering Directorate to HRP in FY2013. This unique modular three-story habitat was designed and created through a series of university competitions and was previously used in the Desert Research and Technology Studies in the Arizona desert.

The HERA will provide a high-fidelity research venue for scientists to use in addressing risks and gaps associated with human performance during spaceflight. Historically, the habitat was used for exploration engineering systems demonstrations. In its new role, the HERA will serve as an analog for simulation of isolation, confinement, and remote conditions of mission exploration scenarios.

Studies suitable for this analog may include behavioral health and performance assessments, communication and autonomy studies, human factors evaluations, and exploration medical capabilities assessments and operations."

Hexoskin's space medicine team is working with the Canadian Space Agency since 2011 on remote medical monitoring systems for long-term space missions and space exploration.

You can find more pictures of the HERA module and the mission on the HERA Crew X Twitter account.
